Brigadoon Software! Brigadoon makes a software product called PC PhoneHome
that automatically sends an e-mail with the current IP to you either every
day or whenever your computer is plugged into a different IP. That way, if
a thief steals your computer, when they plug it into the internet, you will
find out what IP they tried to use and you can track it down through the ISP
that owns that IP.
For those of you on a budget, there is a Freeware version of this product. However, the $30 pro version is harder to remove from the computer and can even withstand reformatting of the hard drive. It runs on System 8.6 and higher, including OS X.
You can find more information on their web page at www.brigadoonsoftware.com.
