AppleGram No. 1 - January 1978

A number of periodicals I subscribe to have a regular feature titled something like this header... In the past year, Janet and I have been working with the back issues of the Applegram, trying to get several complete sets together for historical and reference purposes, and we talked about a retrospective column for our own newsletter. Just barely in time for the January issue I again mentioned the idea to Janet and she OK'd my writing something for the first month of our anniversary year. I think it will be fun to research and write a short feature each month, and I hope it will be interesting to oldcomers and newcomers alike. I'll keep it going, subject to your interest and available space. Issue No. 1 was prepared by Bobbie Ferrell. However, it wasn't printed on her Apple, for we didn't have printers for the Apple quite yet... Bobbie applied herself so well and unselfishly in those early days that she is the best candidate we have for the "founder" of the Apple Corps.

She arranged for us to begin meeting at Greenhill School, where she was the registrar and computer guru. This issue saw the first use of the names Apple Corps ("With a ''ps' instead of an 'e' ", trying to establish some name recognition for our fledgling group...) and Apple-Gram, and Bobbie probably gets credit for both of them.

Notice also that we met for the first time on a Saturday.... another detail that has not changed. This announcement was mailed to all registered Apple owners in the area, compliments of Bob Rodgers, the founder and owner of the CompuShop. Bob had encouraged Bobbie to take on the job of organizing an Apple user group, and he helped us with our mailings for several months. We were having an Apple user-group meeting in Bob's store every Saturday morning anyway, and I think he wanted to get rid of us! (Just kidding, Bob!)

All columns in this series were written in 1988-89, to celebrate ACD's 10th Anniversary!
